Digital Futures stole the crowd at Techmix Digital Careers Show in London
On Tuesday we were delighted to be involved in the Techmix Digital Careers Show in London. We engaged with over a thousand really interesting personalities, from year eight students all the way to second or third time job hunters.
Thanks to the support from the wonderful Luma, we had the busiest stand from start to finish, with people desperate to get their personalised water bottle printed and hear about what we do. A huge majority of these wanted to get involved in a Digital Future's apprenticeship in May or September. It was great to interact with such a variety of people and we have come away with some really interesting insights for the future.
How did the day unfold?
In the morning we were faced with over five hundred year eight to eleven students, from various different schools in London. We found that many of these students were interested in digital marketing and social media but didn’t really know much about further options in these areas. We made sure they went away more knowledgable about the digital apprenticeships available.
The afternoon session presented us with some older and more aware students, mostly doing their A Levels or BTECs. These students knew a lot about apprenticeships and what digital marketing and social media roles involve. This gave us the opportunity to find the students that wanted to apply for our apprenticeships and find out more about what we could do for them.
The evening session comprised of job hunters, which isn’t our area, as we offer apprenticeships to sixteen to twenty four year olds. We asked a lot of questions about how these people gained the experience they had, whether it be through apprenticeships, internships or university and what they thought of these. A lot of them were very interested in what we do and wished they were offered opportunities like ours when they were leaving school.
What did we learn from the event?
When talking to the crowds, it was intriguing to find out what each school’s view on further education was and how the students react to these. Some students told us that their school pushed them towards university and therefore didn’t really know much about apprenticeships at all. Others told us that there was a more balanced view on their options and therefore would definitely consider an apprenticeship over university. Some of the teachers from the schools that do push apprenticeships or even offer their own apprenticeships seemed very keen to work with us and place some of their students in our apprentice roles. There was a very pleasing outcome.
Before the event we found out our stand was surrounded by Barclays, City & Guilds and Cisco, but we were consistently the busiest. We even had Barclays and City & Guilds representatives coming over to see what all the commotion around us was about! The whole event was a great experience for us at Digital Futures and for the students and job hunters that attended and we have learnt a great deal from it. We look forward to attending other events like it and meeting more individuals like those we met on Tuesday.
